洪水の跡くっきりと河浅し こうずい の　あとくっきり と　かわ あさし River, water is low Banks and bridges show Signs of last year’s flood 米国の穀倉地帯である中西部はいま５０余年ぶりの旱魃に見舞われています。降雨は８月初めまで望めそうになく、たとえ雨が降ったとしても穀物はすでに回復不能の状態にあるといわれています。生産者の苦悩は言うまでもありませんが、消費者にとっては特にトウモロコシの不作はただちにガソリンと牛肉の値上げに繋がるだけに無関心ではいられません。ニュース解説に依ると、2007年に立法化したClean Air Act法で、生産されるガソリンの10％はトウモロコシ由来のethanolでなければならないとされています。一方、トウモロコシは家畜の飼料としても必要です。そうなると牛肉だけでなく他の肉類も値上げ必至です。いずれにしても消費者は状況を見守るしかありません。 旱魃の影響は如何にと、オマハ市の東端を流れるミズーリー河を見に行ってきました。去年の今頃はミズーリー河の洪水が話題になりました。川沿いにすむ農家の人にとっては洪水につづいて旱魃とまさにダブルパンチというほかありません。河の水量は確かに減っていますが、上流に建設してあるダムのおかげで、今のところ、家庭に供給される水の制限はないそうです。 写真はミズーリ川沿いにある彫刻です。2011年８月の洪水の時と2012年7月に撮ったものですが、橋桁の中程が黒っぽいのは洪水の跡をしめしています。
