The rainbow is a very famous symbol of Hawaii since it is such a common sight here. In the winter one is much more likely to see a rainbow since there is more rainfall, especially in the morning and evening around sunset. The summer also is a time for seeing rainbows since it often rains up by the mountains. In the early evening rainbows often appear in the Waikiki and Diamond head area. When seen from a boat, the rainbow often looks like it is above a certain hotel or area and it makes for a very nice picture.

　ハワイでは、しょっちゅう虹を見ることができます。虹は、ハワイの有名な象徴（シンボル）です。冬は、夜明けや夕暮れに雨が降ることが多いので、虹の見える可能性がはるかに高くなります。夏は山のそばで雨が降ることが多いので、虹を見る機会があります。夕方になると、虹がワイキキやダイヤモンドヘッド辺りに現れることがよくあります。船の上から見ると、虹はホテルや特別な場所の上にあるように見えることが多く、とても良い写真を撮ることができます。

マウイ島また春が来たバケーション
マウイとう　また はる が きた　バケーション

In the middle of June, I was able to go to both Kona on the island of Hawaii and Lahaina on the island of Maui for a Scuba Diving job. It has been a few months since I last went and with the Covid regulations being ended for inter island travel it was very crowded. There are no rental cars in either places for the months of June and July and I had to wait a very long time at the airport for a taxi to my hotel. The restaurants were so crowded that for lunch and dinner I went to a Convenience store to buy my lunch and dinner. It will probably stay busy through the summer and then level off by fall as things return to normal.

　6月中旬、私はスキューバダイビングの仕事で、ハワイ島のコナとマウイ島のラハイナに行きました。２ヶ月ぶりです。各島間の行き来について、コビッド規制が殆どなくなったので非常に混雑していました。６月、７月、共にレンタカーはなく、私は空港でホテルまでのタクシーを長時間待つ必要がありました。また、どのレストランも混んでいました。そこで、昼食と夕食はコンビニで買いました。おそらく、今年の夏はずっと忙しく、秋になり世の中が普通の状態に戻るまでは、横ばい状態が続くと思います。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – ラスベリー

raspberries
dense growth of thorny plants
search of fruits

ラスベリー棘かき分けて実を探す
ラスベリー　とげ かきわけて　みをさがす

Every year, the raspberry bush gives us red fruits and provides nectar to bumblebees and other insects. There is one trouble, thorns! Although the thorns are much smaller than those of roses, they still are thorns. Every morning, my arms are full of scratches after the harvest of raspberries. I am thinking about some way to cover my arms. But, raspberry season is over quickly.

　毎夏赤い実をつけ、マルハナバチや他の昆虫には花蜜を提供してくれるラスベリー（木苺）の唯一の難点といえば棘です。ばらの棘よりずっと小さいのですが棘であることには変わりなく、毎朝ラスベリーの収穫の後は引っ掻き傷が両腕にたくさん。腕を覆う工夫をしなければと考えている間にラスベリーのシーズンが終わるのが現実です。

伝統の三本マスト船出する
でんとうの　さんぼん マスト　ふなで する

Since I am out on the ocean every day I am able to see many different kinds of boats. There are the usual dive boats, snorkel boats, fishing boats and para sailing boats. Since I am so close to Honolulu harbor I also get to see the big freighters and tug boats come out. Every once in a while there is a special kind of boat that I don’t get to see. Recently a beautiful three masted schooner went by Waikiki. It was a very beautiful sight to see. I realized that at one time those were the only kind of boats to see but now they are a relic from a different time. I hope that someday I have a chance to go on one! 　

　私は毎日海に出ているので、いろいろな種類のボートを見ることができます。例えば、通常のダイビングボート、シュノーケルボート、漁船、パラセーリングボートです。私はホノルル港にとても近いところにいるので、大きな貨物船やタグボートが出て行くのを見ることができます。たまに、滅多に見られない、特別な船を見ることがあります。最近、3本マストの帆船がワイキキを通りました。とても美しい光景でした。かつてはそれしか見られなかった船でしたが、今では前世紀の遺物になっていることに気づきました。いつか私も乗りたいです。

mask gone
the face looks unfamiliar
do I know her?

マスク無し名前と顔が一致せず
マスクなし　なまえ と かお が　いっち せず

A recently seen newspaper article, told by a college teacher: she was greeted by an unmasked student. The teacher returned the greeting without much thought. A few hours later, the teacher realized the student belonged to her class and e-mailed hastily apologizing for her bluntness. Mask mandate was started over one year ago, meaning the new students came to colleges already in masks. Thus, teachers never saw faces of students without masks until recently. From now on, teachers’ task is to connect name and face of each student correctly.

　新聞で見た記事です。ある大学の先生の話：大学内で学生に挨拶されお座なりに返礼した数時間後、学生が自分のゼミの生徒と気付きあわててE-メールで謝ったそうです。昨年の春、学生が大学に来た時は既にマスク着用令が出た後で、その後一年間余り、マスク着用した顔しか見なかった結果、このような笑い話となったわけです。これから生徒の名前と顔とを一致させるのが大仕事ですね。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – マスク廃止令

マスクの絵取るか着けるか店の前
マスク の え　とるか つけるか　みせ の まえ

Midnight of May 25th, the mask mandate is cancelled in Nebraska (the governor issued the notice on TV). The coronavirus death has become zero and the statewide vaccination rate has reached 50% . According to the guideline from the CDC, those who are fully vaccinated may take off masks.  However,  all staff in supermarkets still wear masks  and some shoppers also wear masks. It seems that the time hasn’t come when you can completely forget masks.

　5月25日午前０時、ネブラスカ州民のマスク着用の公的義務が廃止されました（知事がテレビで発表）。コロナウイルスによる死亡が零になったと同時に州ワクチンの接種率が５０パーセントに達したからです。CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and prevention 連邦疾病管理予防センター）の指針によると、ワクチンの完全接種が終了した人はマスク着用不要、としています。しかし、多数の人が出入りするところ、例えばスーパーマーケットでは、店員は皆マスク着用、買い物客も多数がマスク着用しています。マスクを手放す日はまだまだ先のようです。
