偽装して餌がくるまでじっと待つ
ぎそう して　えさ が くる まで　じっと まつ

When I go scuba diving I like to show my customers turtles and sharks and other big types of sea life but my favorite fish to show are actually very small. One is a frog fish and the other is a leaf fish. The frog fish actually looks like a frog and its movements are also like a frog’s movement. The leaf fish looks exactly like a leaf from a tree! Sometimes my customers have no interest in seeing anything else but those two fish! Even though they are very small, sometimes just a few inches, finding them is very exciting for both myself and my customers.

　お客様とスキューバダイビングに行く時、私は亀や鮫など大きな物を見せるのが好きです。確実にお客様に喜んで頂けるからです。しかし実は、私が一番見せたい魚はとても小さな魚です。一つは、オオモン カエル アンコウ、もう一つは、ハダカハ オコゼです。カエルアンコウは、本当にカエルに似ています。動き方もカエルにそっくりです。ハダカハオコゼは、木の葉に似ています。大きさは、２つとも非常に小さく、ほんの７～８センチくらいです。時にお客様は、この２つの魚だけに興味を持たれます。この２つの魚を見つけることは、私にとっても、お客様にとっても、非常にエキサイティングなことです。そして、見付けた時は本当に嬉しくなります。

休暇中子供の誕生暇がない
きゅうか ちゅう　こども の たんじょう　ひま が ない

Recently, I transferred to a new department with the state and took a new job. Now I work for the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs doing bank examinations. Three weeks after starting I had to take a leave of absence. I was on leave for 3 months and spent the entire time in Tokyo. For the first 3 weeks I did nothing but clean, pack, and prepare for the birth of my kid. After the kid was born, my wife stayed in the hospital for 5 days. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those 5 days would be my last real vacation. However, I don’t mind. I am happy to spend my days with my wife and daughter.

　最近、私は新しい部門に異動になり、新しい仕事を担当することになりました。消費者問題などを扱い、銀行の審査を行います。仕事を始めて3週間経った頃、私は3か月の休暇を取り、東京で過ごすことにしました。子供の誕生に備える為です。最初の3週間は、掃除をしたり、荷物の整理をしたり、子供の誕生の準備をしました。 子供が生まれた後、妻は5日間入院しました。当時は気づいていませんでしたが、この5日間が私の最後の本当の休暇になりました。しかし、私は気にしません。私は妻と娘と一緒に過ごしているので幸せです。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – トマト収穫

the hottest days are gone
tomatoes and eggplants
harvest time

酷暑過ぎトマトとナスビ収穫す
こくしょ すぎ　トマトとナスビ　しゅうかく す

Everyday in the last week was near one-hundred degrees. But that was what tomatoes and eggplants needed to ripe and be harvested this week. As cherry tomatoes, Cherokee Purple, Black Prince and other tomatoes were planted in no particular order, it was hard to identify each one when they were young. Eggplants fail to grow large due, perhaps, to the cold spells we had in April. There is one concern right now. That is haze caused by smoke from wild fires in Canada and the West Coast region.

　先週は毎日１００度近く（摂氏３７度以上）まで上がりましたが、トマト等の野菜の熟成に必要とあらば我慢もできます。期待どうり、今週はトマトを収穫。色々の種類の苗、チェリートマト（ミニトマト）、チョロキーパープル（Cherokee Purple)、ブラックプリンス　(Black Prince) 等を適当に植えたので実がなって初めてわかった種類もあります。茄子は４月の寒波の影響かいまひとつパッとしません。目下の気がかりはカナダと西海岸地方の山火事の煙がこの辺りまで流れてきて陽光に陰りが見られることです。

sunsetting clouds
pour into the mountain side
rivals the sunset

サンセット山脈に注ぐ雲のショー
サンセット　さんみゃく に そそぐ　くも の ショー

I have written haikus dealing with the beautiful sunsets in Hawaii and one of the nice things about our sunsets in Hawaii are the beautiful cloud formations that form around the sunset time. One of my favorites is when the clouds almost look like they are falling into the Waianae mountain range. The angle of the boat and the way the sun is setting creates an optical illusion where the clouds seem to be going right into the mountain. Sometimes these scenes are better than the sunset!

　私はハワイの夕日を扱った俳句を書いたことがあります。ハワイの夕日の見どころの一つは、日没の頃に現れる美しい雲の形だと思います。私の好きな風景は、ワイアナエ山脈の中に雲が飲み込まれて行くように見える時です。船の角度と沈む夕日の関係で、雲が山に向かっているような錯覚が起こります。時に、このような風景は、サンセットそのものより見ごたえがあります。
