Collaborative Haiku Poem – ひまわりすだれ

sunflowers
block afternoon sun
like a bamboo blind

ひまわりや西日遮る簾かな
ひまわり や　にしび さえぎる　すだれ かな　

All these years, a hot, summer afternoon sun was blocked conveniently by maple trees in a neighbor’s yard, until one of trees was felled in this past winter storm. We thought that a line of mammoth sunflowers might do the substitute job. Mammoth sunflowers grow almost 12 feet tall and flowers can be 15 inches wide. If they grow as expected, they may look like a bamboo blind. In addition, seeds of the sunflowers are good feed for squirrels and cardinals.

　これまではお隣の楓の木がうまい具合に夏の午後の陽光を遮っていましたが、この冬の暴風で木が倒れてしまい遮るものがなくなってしまいました。そこで、この夏は家の西側にマンモスひまわりを８本植えてみました。マンモスの名前の通り高さ２メートル以上、花は直径３０センチ近くと大きいひまわりで、順調に育てば西陽を遮る簾のようになるのではと期待しています。また、花が終わった後にできる種はリスやカーディナルの大好物です。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – 夏間近

summer is near
pruning and cleaning
raspberry bushes

夏間近慌てて剪定ラスベリー
なつ まぢか　あわてて せんてい　ラスベリー

When new leaves begin sprouting, all plants start growing vigorously. Not just raspberries but also butterfly bushes need pruning, and yards have to be cleaned of last winter debris. It is a busy time.

　新芽が出始めると、植物はぐんぐん成長するばかり。ラスベリーやバタフライブッシュの剪定ばかりに構っていられません。 庭のあちこちに積もった、過ぎし冬の枯葉の清掃も必要と、急に忙しい毎日です。

a fascinating habit

目覚めたら祈りの日記よい習慣
めざめたら　いのり の にっき　よい しゅうかん

For the last few months I’ve been journaling upon waking first thing in the morning and it’s making a positive difference to my day. I journal about the things I’m grateful for the things I’m praying for and the things I’m excited about. I pray and meditate on this and then share this with my son Bali who reads a sacred scripture. I find this a very positive way to start my day that I want to keep up forever.

　この数か月間、私は毎朝目覚めると、まず最初に日記をつけています。そうすることで私の一日は積極的なものになります。ありがたいと感じることや、祈っていることや、ワクワクすることなどを日記に書きます。私は瞑想をし、お祈りをして、息子のバリに説明してあげると、バリは聖書の言葉を読みます。この習慣は、私が一日を始めるための、非常に前向きになれる方法です。これからもずっと続けていきたいと思います。
