nature’s cruel balance

海たぎる絶景砕く唸り声
うみ たぎる　ぜっけい くだく　うなりごえ

Sometimes in my job I will leave before the submarine in our skiff, which is like a speed boat to set up everything for the submarines. It is always a beautiful part of the day because the other staff and I are the first ones out and it is like we have a private ocean! We often have dolphins swimming with us and we are able to see whales much better than the whale watching tours! Sometimes, however, nature can seem to be cruel. Recently on the way out we saw what looked to be an enormous turtle on the surface. We went closer to see and were amazed that half of it was gone and that there were teeth marks from a shark. About 30 seconds later three very large tiger sharks attacked the remains of the turtle and the water looked as if it were boiling and the sharks tails came out of the water! In less than 30 seconds it was over! The sharks went back to the deeper waters and all that was left of the turtle were little pieces of white meat and a horrible stench filled the air! All around us was such beauty but in that one space for a short period of time we saw the other side of nature.

　ハワイでアトランティス潜水艦ツアーの仕事をする私は、ツアーが始まる前に、スキッフという小型のモーターボートで潜水艦のところへ行き、ツアーの準備をすることがあります。一日の中で、例外なしに素晴らしい海は、その時の海です。人っ子一人いない早朝の海は、まるで自分だけの海のように感じます。イルカは、しょっちゅう、ボートの回りを一緒に泳ぎますし、鯨は、ホエールウォッチングのツアーで見るより、間近に見ることが出来ます。しかし、時に自然は残酷です。この間、海面を漂う大きな物体を見ました。近づいて行くと物凄く大きな亀でした。甲羅の半分はなくなり、残り半分に鮫の歯型がありました。驚きました。ほんの３０秒後、巨大な鮫が３頭、亀の残骸を攻撃しに来ました。その光景は、海面が沸騰しているかのようでした。鮫の尻尾が見え隠れしていました。その後、鮫は水中深く、もぐって行きました。残されたものは、白い小さな亀の肉片と恐ろしい悪臭でした。ほんの一瞬の出来事でした。私達は美しい自然に囲まれていますが、ある所では、わずかな時間の中で、自然の過酷な一面を見せつけられます。

undulating waves
foaming and splashing
splendid seascape

ひたひたと泡の織物砂の浜
ひたひた と　あわ の おりもの　すな の はま

Green rolling hills with endless breathtaking coastal views and sweeping natural shorelines , pristine beaches untouched by highrises and commercial development, and perfect sunny days , blue skies and friendly folks , The Sunshine Coast is a mecca of relaxation and rejuvenation. I feel very blessed to be part of this diverse community , part country , part beach, part mountainous country , with bustling villages and towns abound, and a diverse small but interesting international community too, the Sunshine Coast is a wonderful new chapter in my life, and a most revitalizing place to call home.

　延々と続く、息を飲むような海辺の景色、そして、それと一体になった、ゆるやかな緑の丘陵地帯、高層ビルや商業開発とは無縁の広範囲に広がる自然の海岸線、 そして、自然のままで、手つかずの浜辺、雲一つない晴れ渡った日々、青空、そして、親しみやすい人達、サンシャインコーストは、くつろぎと活力回復を求める人にとって、あこがれの地です。このような海辺や小高い丘の連なる地域、そして、多様なコミュニティーが存在する地域の一員であることは、大変、恵まれています。多くの人でにぎわう集落や町が、たくさんあります。小規模ですが、興味深い国際的なコミュニティーもあります。サンシャインコーストは、私の人生に、新しく、又、素晴らしい一章を切り開き、新しい命や活力を与えてくれる我が家と呼べるところです。
