The Nijo castle in Kyoto came from the Shogun era. It is a symbol of the warrior ethic. The castle is foreboding with a wide moat around it. The palace itself has paintings of tigers. The tigers were used to intimidate guests of the Shogun. If that were not fearsome enough, the floors creak. In the quiet of the castle, each sound must have felt like a roar.

　現在の二条城は、徳川幕府の時代に、後水尾天皇の行幸を迎えるため大改築されたお城です。これは武士道の象徴です。広いお堀のある、お城は宏壮です。御殿には、虎の絵があります。将軍の権力を示し、訪ねる者に睨みを効かせる為に虎が使われました。それでも怖くなければ、床が軋（きし）む仕掛けもあります。うぐいす張りの廊下です。静かな城の中で、歩く度に床の軋む音は、唸り声のように聞こえます。

２０１７年６月、初めて京都に旅しました。
印象に残っている光景のひとつです。

Inari peak
Kyoto spreads sun dips

From the top of Mount Inari, you can see the city of Kyoto as it spreads into the distance. It is a beautiful sight especially as the sun sets. After working hard to climb the mountain, the scenery is a magnificent reward. Although there are many people at the bottom of the mountain, when you reach the summit, the quiet is peaceful. In that moment, one cannot help but marvel at the natural beauty and feel that this place is blessed.

　私たちは、稲荷山の頂上から京都の町を一望することができます。特に、頂上からの夕日の眺めは最高です。苦労して山を登りきった後、目の前に広がる美しい景色を楽しむことは、素晴らしいご褒美です。山の麓にはたくさん人がいます。しかし、頂上まで来ると、静かで平安な世界が広がっています。その時、私たちは、この自然の美しさに驚嘆し、また、この場所が祝福されていると感じざるを得ません。

At least once a week there will be a cruise ship in Honolulu harbor. Sometimes the ships are on a world tour and the passengers have been on for as long as six months or more! Other times it may be a cruise ship coming from Japan on the first leg of a American West Coast tour. There are also cruise ships that simply visit all of the Hawaiian Islands. The biggest ships are of course the world tour ships. I often meet many of the passengers as they often come and do the submarine tour. I always hear stories on how big it is inside the ship and how it is like being in a shopping mall. The stories of how wonderful the food is and how it is available 24 hours a day amazes me! There are always many things to do and many of the people that I talk to have often taken many cruises and I am always surprised on how reasonable the price is. I have never been on a cruise but I would like to try at least once. I would love to take a round trip cruise to Hokkaido and back. I have heard that the scenery is very beautiful. Because the ships are so big, even people who get sea sick are usually fine.

　ホノルル港では、少なくとも週に一度、豪華客船の旅を楽しむことができます。時に、その船は世界一周の旅です。乗客は、６ヶ月、あるいはそれ以上の期間、船旅を続けます。またある時には、日本からアメリカ西海岸に向かうクルーズ・ツアーの最初の寄港地のこともあります。ハワイ諸島を巡るクルーズ船もあります。一番大きな船は、もちろん世界ツアーの船です。クルーズ船の乗客は、潜水艦ツアーにも、よく参加されますので、たくさんの乗客と出会います。そんな時、私は乗客から色々なことを聞きます。例えば、船内はどんなに大きくて、ショッピングモールにいるようだと言ったお話です。料理がもの凄く美味しい上に、レストランが２４時間営業であることには本当に驚きます。船内ではいつも催しがたくさんあり、話をした乗客の多くは、何度もクルーズ船を利用していました。そして、私がいつも驚くことは、値段が手頃なことです。私は、クルーズ船に乗ったことは一度もありません。しかし、少なくとも一度は乗ってみたいと思っています。私は、北海道往復クルーズに乗ってみたいと思っています。景色がとても美しいそうです。船は凄く大きいので、船酔いになる人でも大丈夫だと言うことです。
