オマハに女性市長誕生 5月14日の選挙でオマハに初の女性市長が誕生しました。既に世界各国の政治家のトップが女性である事実からすると、女性市長は格別珍しくはありませんが、米国内でも比較的保守的と見られているネブラスカで、又、一方では大統領選挙ではオバマ氏を選出して、デモクラット(民主党)強しを印象ずけたオマハ市がリパブリカン(共和党)候補を市長に選んだ事は興味のあるところです。 この日はたまたま記録的な高温が予想されていましたので、涼しい早朝に投票所に行きました。投票所といっても日本の選挙時と違い、それと知らなければ見過ごしてしまうほどの静かな建物です。投票を終えたところでI vote today と書いたステイカーをもらい胸にぴたりを貼付けました。ちなみに、気温は華氏101度(摂氏36度)まで上がりました。その2日前の夜間は華氏32度(摂氏0度)に下がりましたが、このような温度差はネブラスカではさほど稀なことではありません。
