もうすぐ年に一度の健康診断。その際に握力検査もします。私の握力は左右ほぼ同じで同年齢の女性平均以上。そこで、手の事を昔のエッセイで話題にしたことを思い出しました。私は２０００年から２００２年にかけてカリフォルニアのインターネット版毎日新聞USAにエッセイ「ヴァイオリン弾きのお美っちゃん」というタイトルで連載していました。以下の短い文章はエッセイのひとつの抜粋です。（中村美智子）
………左手でお箸を持って食事をしていると「あっ、左利きですか」と言われる。いろいろな場面での小さなやりとり。心の中で用意されていた答えとは違う返答があると、人は、ほんの少しだけ騙されたような顔つきを見せる。１０歳のある時「もしも病気か事故で右手が使えなくなったら左手で食べよう」と思いつき、左手にお箸を持ってラーメンを食べた。初めてお箸を左手に持つのに何の苦労もなかったので、もしかして元々両利きだったのかもしれない。「誰でもない。私自身が可能性を縛りつけていたのではないか」と思ったりする。………
鎌倉の川喜多映画記念館へ行ってきました。今日はイタリア映画の「ニュー シネマ パラダイス」です。エンニオ モリコーネ作曲のテーマ音楽は私のヴァイオリン演奏ひとり語りレパートリーのひとつ。外に出ると鶯の鳴き声が聞こえてきました。内も外も落ち着きのある楽しい雰囲気でした。（美智子）
I went to the Kawakita Film Museum in Kamakura. Today, I saw the Italian movie, “Cinema Paradiso”. The theme music, composed by Ennio Morricone, is one of my violin solo repertoires. When I went outside, I heard the beautiful voice of nightingale. There was a calm and pleasant atmosphere both inside and outside. (Michiko)

外は蒸し暑いどんより雲。家に帰ると雨になりました。私の手作りの美味しいシャーベットを食べながらFMラジオをつけると、ロマンの憂愁漂う美しいシューマンのチェロ協奏曲イ短調が流れてきました。聴いているとなぜか私は真っ青な海の庭園を見たくなり机の上に作ってみました。（美智子）
It was muggy and overcast outside this morning, and then I got back home, it started raining. I turned on the FM radio while eating my delicious homemade sherbet. The radio started playing Schumann’s beautiful Cello Concerto in A minor, with its romantic melancholy. For some reason, I wanted to see a deep blue sea garden, so I made one on my desk. (Michiko)

甘酒シャーベットを作りました。チェリーの甘酸っぱさと良質の濃厚な甘酒が良く合います。最後はさわやかな緑茶。おうちカフェが一番だわ。（美智子）
I made amazake sherbet. The sweet and sour taste of the cherries goes well with the rich, high-quality amazake. I finish it off with some refreshing green tea. Home café is the best. (Michiko)

お墓参りをしてから宮永さんのカフェ デイ ドリーム ビリーバーで昼食。去年の夏にフウセンカズラの種を蝉丸さんに頂いて、曜子さんに差し上げたらこんなに大きく育てていました。息子さんのシェフ慧介さんは小学から大学生までバスケットボールの選手。現在も休みの日には仲間とバスケットボールを楽しんでいます。（美智子）
After visiting the grave, I had lunch at Miyanaga-san’s cafe. Her son, Chef Keisuke-san was a basketball player from elementary school to college, and he still enjoys playing basketball with his friends on his days off. (Michiko)

毎週、お供え飾りを作って取り替えています。作るのが楽しくて毎日お墓参りに行きたいくらいです。先週はピンクとアイス。今日は紫の桔梗の気分です。天国の夫 修三さんが「おまえは何でも遊びにするんやなあ」と笑って言っているのが聞こえます。（美智子）
Every week, I make and replace the offerings. I enjoy making them, and I feel like visiting the grave every day. It was pink and ice cream last week, and I’m in the mood for purple bellflowers today. I can hear my husband Shuzo in heaven, laughing and saying, “Michiko, you make everything into a fun game.” (Michiko)

抹茶でシャーベットを作りました。抹茶のほろ苦さとあんこの甘みがよく合っています。茶碗は約３０年前に私が作りました。色合いに深い味わいが増していきます。（美智子）
I made a summer snack using green tea (matcha). The topping is red bean paste. The bitterness of the matcha sherbet goes well with the sweetness of the bean paste. I made this tea bowl about 30 years ago. The color has a deeper flavor. (Michiko)

週に一度、整形外科に変形性股関節症のリハビリに通っています。小田急線と相鉄線を乗り継いで行きます。リハビリのあと、駅のすぐ側に新しくオープンした雰囲気の良いカフェを見つけました。お料理が美味しくてくつろぐことができました。左股関節の痛みも楽しみに変わります。（美智子）
I visit orthopedic clinic once a week to rehab for my osteoarthritis of hip. I found a newly-opened cafe near the station after rehabilitation. Food was delicious and the atmosphere was also good. I was able to relax and the pain turned into pleasure. (Michiko)
