The fishing boat that ran aground had been on the reef for about 8 hours on the first day that I saw it which was Friday, October the 13th and was about 2 miles off shore from Waikiki and about 1 mile away from Diamond Head. When I was looking at it I could see the waves crashing against it and it reminded me of wild animals circling a dieing animal in the wilderness. It was low tide the first time I saw it and the waves looked like they were being thrown against the boat. I knew that the Coast Guard was waiting for high tide before it attempted to get the boat off the reef. While they were waiting anything considered dangerous like fuel and oil were being taken off. The crew had been taken off right away so it was only the rescuers that could be seen.

On Saturday, the next day, I was very surprised to see that the boat was still there and that they had not been able to free it. The opinion of everybody was that the coral had probably pierced the hull and that it would be very dangerous to take off as it might sink right away. In the afternoon I was working on the submarine and I heard on the headphone that the ship was on fire! When we surfaced at the end of the tour we could see the flames. It remind me of dancers as the flames seemed to have a special dance that they were doing. At first the smoke was very black but as the day went on it became a very light gray. At first the Fire Department and Coast Guard tried to put out the fire but it was impossible so they pulled away from the boat and kept a very careful watch of it.

I have been watching the fishing boat these last two weeks very carefully and it looked like nothing was going to be done as the Coast Guard and other work boats no longer came and the fishing boat looked like that would be the final resting place. I searched the newspapers and internet but there was nothing about the wreck until I read an article in the paper on November 8th. The article said that the Coast Guard was taking bids from various companies on removing the fishing boat and they had yet to decide on the method to be used. They had to worry about both damage being done to the reef and also the cost of the operation. The article also mentioned that at night small boats were going up to it out of curiosity and the hopes that there would be something to take. The Coast Gueard warned that not only was that dangerous but also considered as trespassing and the person or persons could be arrested. I noticed from the picture that the stern of the boat was facing towards the beach which I guessed that maybe the Captain realized his mistake and tried to turn the boat around but it was too late.

　２０１７年１０月１３日金曜日のことです。私は一隻の漁船が座礁しているのを目撃しました。事故現場は、ワイキキ海岸の沖合い、およそ３キロ、ダイヤモンドヘッドから１.６キロのところにありました。座礁した日、その漁船は８時間あまり珊瑚礁に乗り上げたままの状態になっていました。波が漁船にぶち当たり砕け散るのが見えました。それは野生動物が瀕死の重傷を負った獲物の回りをグルグル回っている姿を思い出させました。私が初めてそれを見た時は、干潮でした。波は漁船に叩きつけられているかのようでした。沿岸警備隊は、漁船を珊瑚礁から引き離す為に満潮になるのを待っているのが分かりました。沿岸警備隊の人たちは、満潮を待っている間、燃料や油のように危険なものを取り除いていました。乗組員はすぐに救助され、ホノルル空港から帰国したので、事故現場では、救助隊だけを見ることができました。

土曜日、次の日になっても事故現場に漁船があり、珊瑚礁に乗り上げた状態だったので、私は、大変、驚きました。他のスタッフの意見は、恐らく、珊瑚が船体に突き刺さり、珊瑚礁から引き離すと、すぐに沈没する危険があるのではないかと云うことでした。その日の午後、私は潜水艦の中にいたのですが、ヘッドフォンで、船が火災を起こしていることを知りました。潜水艦ツアーが終わって浮上した時、火の手が見えました。炎は、特別なダンスをしているようで、私は、ダンサーを思い浮かべました。最初、火災の煙は真っ黒でしたが、だんだん非常に明るい灰色になりました。最初、消防署と沿岸警備隊は、消火活動を行なっていましたが、不可能でした。それで、船体を珊瑚礁から引き離し、慎重に監視を続けていました。

この２週間あまり、私は座礁した漁船を注意深く見守ってきました。沿岸警備隊や作業船は、もはや来なくなり、漁船は放置状態になりました。事故現場が、永眠の地であるかのようでした。私は、新聞やインターネットをいろいろ調べましたが、難破船についての記事は何も見つかりませんでした。１１月８日になって、やっと記事が出ました。記事によると、沿岸警備隊は、漁船を移動させる為に色々な会社に入札を実施したが、どの方法をとるか、まだ決定されていないと云うことでした。彼らは、サンゴ礁への被害と実施費用の両方を心配しなければなりません。記事は、また、夜になると、好奇心から小さなボートで難破船まで行き、中に乗り込んで船内に残っている物を探す者がいることを報じていました。沿岸警備隊は警告を出しました。それは危険なだけでなく、不法侵入と判断され、逮捕されることもあるということです。私は、記事の写真を見た時、一つのことに気づきました。漁船の船尾が浜辺に向いていました。恐らく、船長は浅瀬に入ってしまったことに気付いたと思います。間違いが分って、向きを変える努力もしたと思います。しかし、気付くのが遅すぎたようです。
