I am very fortunate to have been able to travel all over the Pacific area and have lived in both Japan and Australia which I loved very much but my home will always be Hawaii. All year long there are certain things that I have only found here. The way the trade winds blow at different times of the year and all the beautiful sights to see which make all the islands unique amongst themselves. Since I live in Oahu, Waikiki takes up a very special place. Even though it is full of people, I never have the feeling that it is crowded. I am always happy to see so many people from all over the world enjoying my home! On Waikiki beach you can see people from Japan sitting next to people from Europe smiling and talking to people from New York! It makes me happy to see such a variety of people here. It is as if it is a safe haven from the troubles the rest of the world has to face. Even though it is a small island I have never had “Island Fever”. In fact, it is the opposite! I feel very safe on my little island in the middle of the Pacific ocean surrounded by beauty.

私は太平洋地域の国々をいろいろ旅して回りました。幸運だったと思います。又、大好きな日本とオーストラリアには住んでいたこともあります。しかし、私の活動拠点はいつもハワイです。一年を通して、ここでしか見つけられないものがあります。季節によって貿易風の吹き方は異なり、それぞれの島は独自の美しさを持っています。オアフ島に住んで以来、ワイキキは、本当に特別な場所になりました。ワイキキは人が多いですが混雑している感じがまったくありません。世界中からやって来る人達が、ハワイを楽しんでいる姿を見るのが好きです。ワイキキ・ビーチでは、日本人観光客がヨーロッパ人の隣に座り、あるいは、ニューヨークから来た人とにこやかに話している光景を見ることができます。色々な国から来た人達を見ると幸せな気持ちになります。ハワイは、世界が直面している様々な問題に対する安全な避難場所であるかのようです。オアフ島は小さな島ですが、私はアイランドフィーバーにかかったことはありません。実は反対です。太平洋の真ん中にあり、美しさに取り囲まれたこの小さな島に私は安心感を持っています。（ちなみに、「アイランド・フィーバー」とは、狭い島に閉じ込められた時、精神的に滅入ってしまう症状です。鬱病と違い、科学的に認められた症状でもありません。）

アラスカへ旅立つジャンプまた来年
アラスカへ　たびだつジャンプ　またらいねん

水しぶき一つ残して海の旅
みずしぶき　ひとつのこして　うみのたび

I was very, very fortunate that on the last day of the Whale watching tours I saw a whale breach! There were about 100 customers on the boat that I was on and unfortunately they were looking at the shore of Waikiki and for some reason I looked out toward the front of the boat and a whale breached in almost a slow motion kind of movement. I quick said over the microphone that a whale had breached and all the customers and staff rushed over to see but it was gone! The whale will usually come back up but it didn’t. I felt like I had a private show where the whale was saying goodbye and see you next ! The whales now make their long journey back to Alaska where the Mothers once again can eat since they don’t while in the Hawaiian waters and they continue to take care of their calves. So other then a rare sighting, I will be waiting until around November for them to come back.

私は非常に幸運でした。ホエールウォッチングの最終日、私はブリーチングと呼ばれる鯨のジャンプを見ました。遊覧船には約１００名のお客様が乗っていました。残念ながら、お客様は、ワイキキ海岸の方を見ていました。その時、私は、なぜか船の前方を見ていたのですが、鯨が、ほとんどスローモーションのような形で水面に姿を現しました。私は、すぐにマイクで、鯨がブリーチング（海面に踊り上がり着水）したことを伝えました。お客様とスタッフは大急ぎで見に来ました。しかし、すでに鯨の姿はありませんでした。大抵の場合、すぐ海面に戻って来るのですが戻って来ませんでした。私は鯨が、私の為だけに、お別れの挨拶をし、「また来年」と言ってくれたように感じました。鯨は、これからアラスカに戻る為に長い旅をしなければなりません。アラスカに戻れば母親達は、また食事をすることが出来ます。ハワイにいる間は食べないそうです。そして、稀なケースを除いて、子育てを続けます。私は、１１月頃に戻って来るのを待ちます。
