Siberius said…..

The great Finnish composer Siberius said to a young composer whose first symphony was not well received

“There is no town in the world which has critics’ statue.”

Surprisingly Good Times

I thought that I should write about another event I had the other night at the restaurant. 6 Japanese ladies came in for dinner and when they sat down, I could tell right away that we weren’t going to be speaking any English. Again, I thought to myself these ladies must be brave, they speak little to no English, but their in Hawaii at a nice restaurant and must feel like they will be able to get their wants and needs across successfully. Of course they did the old “sumimasen order ii desu ka?” and I responded by saying “sumimasen, demo watashi wa nihongo shaberahen, gomenasai zen zen wakarehen!” They immediately were struck with surprise and aww and were trying to figure out if I was being serious or just joking with them. I was just joking of course and they ended up having an amazing meal, followed by a monster photo session after dinner with all the girls. They asked me “deibido sashin tottemo ii desu ka?” to which I responded “hai, demo 500 yen desu!” they responded “Eh, yasui desu ne!” to which we all laughed together once again.

Sumimasen

Today Shuzo and I were going over the importance and power of using “sumimasen”. I found it interesting that it is used all the time in the restaurant that I work at. I often wonder do the Japanese just naturally say without thinking. For example they are sitting at their table and decide that it is time to order, then immediately someone raises their hand and says “sumimasen, order ii desu ka?”. I look at them for a moment with my blonde hair and blue eyes and think is this “ishin denshin” do they know I understand them or do they just assume that since their in the magical Japanese speaking land of Waikiki they can speak Japanese. I mean if they were in a restaurant in Seattle, would they do the exact same thing?

Nothing much going on

After I came back a little sick from my trip to Japan, I guess I must have passed my cold to my mom. I gave her some of my medicine I used when I was in Japan. It probably contained the same ingredients that we use in America (I couldn’t read the active ingredients that were written in Kanji) but it was in powder form. The reasoning for the Japanese to make it this way is that it probably gets aborbed into our blood stream faster. It’s no big deal but I just thought it was a little different because in America all our medication is usually in the convenient pill or capsule format.

work game

I think someone should invent a game to help people have more fun doing their work.  I would like a game that let us create a character and then enter our day’s to-do list.  During the day, we’d check off stuff we’d finished, and for each completed task, we’d get some character upgrade points.  Then we could make our characters all fancy and then do stuff with them!  I’m not sure what would happen after that, though.  😀
