This is today’s moon in our town, around 5:30am on November 15th. The largest Super moon since 1948 appeared yesterday on November 14, 2016. The moon made its closest distance to Earth in 68 years.

Haiku Poem –

maker of legends
cold white orb
floating in black

Jim version

Michiko version

Michiko version

In Hawaii, the full moon is always spectacular! The moon is so large that it seems so close that one can almost touch it. When I look at the full moon I can tell that it is something that has been here much longer than me and will be here after I have been gone for hundreds if not thousands of years. Although it gives off a very bright light it is in a way sterile as it provides no warmth at all. It can almost symbolize some people who may be very famous but at the same time they are very cold and do nothing for those who are attracted to them.

Today, we met Sam-san & Elly-chan at Fujisawa station and we walked to the north. We mentioned about the time difference between Japan and foreign countries when we talk via skype. Because it’s always important to check the time and day for not making a mistake when we do skype. Sam-san sometimes become jet lag…hahaha! I’m sorry to hear that, but it was funny to talk about this subject!

Haiku Poem – うどん

glistening white
mountains of noodles
my eyes never leave

For quite a few years, Japanese food has been my favorite food. I love fish and seafood and it is often used in Japanese cooking. Also, there are many different types of Japanese Cuisine that are available. One type that I really like is the many types of noodles. Somen, Soba and Udon are staples at my house! Of the three, my favorite is plain, cold Udon. It is very easy to make and one can add many different items to it. I find that it is especially good on a hot day. When I have just Udon noodles I rarely add anything to it. Just eat it as is and I am sure that you will find that it is both very delicious
and filling!

Today, I went to Fujisawa community center to meet Minagawa-san, and I received a new Fujisawa-shuku flag. This flag is written with white in red fabric. I hang it on the wall as a background when I do skype to NACOS family. This flag has a cheerful color, so I like it! On my way home, near Fujisawa station, I watched a Japanese drum performance for the anti-crime campaign. It was energetic too!

Haiku Poem –

exploding outwards
shimmering goblets of air
giant jacuzzi

One of the procedures of the submarine that I enjoy very much is the ascent. Before ascending the Captain releases high pressure air from the submarine. When the high pressure air is released the submarine is usually in at least 2 atmospheres of pressure. Inside of the submarine it is always at 1 atmosphere so there never is any pressure change that often occurs in an airplane. When the high pressure air is first released, the bubbles are very small but as they ascend they become 2 to 3 times bigger because of the increase of volume. Once the bubbles reach the surface the Captain of the shuttle boat sees them and then know where the submarine is at. If the surface is all clear then the Captain tells the Submarine Captain by way of the Underwater Telephone that it is safe to surface. Sometimes other boats are in the area and the submarine has to wait for getting clearance. If clearance is given right away then the submarine starts the ascent and it goes so fast that it actually passes the bubbles so that if one sees them it looks like they are sinking!

Pal

Kishore-san came to Zengyo today. It was a fine autumn day, so he was happy. He ate a kuzukiri for the first time. He is also interested in Japanese culture, so I taught him some important points when we make a collaborative haiku poem in English and Japanese. He started to make the first Haiku Poem. And I continue to correct his intonation and pronunciation, so Kishore-san is gradually improving. After that, we had a long walk in Fujisawa. We spent a meaningful day as well.

Scott

Michiko says to Scott, “I can’t hear that sound.”
“I’m hitting myself!”, Scott says.
Oh my goodness! He has 孫の手(まごのて), a back-scratcher, in Hawaii. Now, his Japanese doesn’t sound like a girl, but his face is sore after pronunciation exercises. It’s too much fun! I love NACOS family!

Pal

Kishore-san came to Zengyo. I checked and corrected his Japanese. In order to have him notice the wrong pronunciation, I made a sound by using this tool, a back-scratcher, 孫の手 as an encouragement. Then, he was able to speak with natural intonation and flow. Kishore-san is improving slowly but steadily! After that, we went to a soba restaurant in Zengyo. Japanese Soba is Kishore-san’s favorite food.
