一体に、気温が下がり始めると鳥の餌箱の周囲がにぎやかになりますが、木の幹をつついて生きた虫を食料とするはずの啄木鳥（キツツキ）も仲間入りします。大きな音を立ててトウモロコシをつついていた啄木鳥、それも食べるわけではなく、くちばし訓練のためのようですが、好奇心にかられてベランダへ降りてくると、いっちに、さんしと、一人で行進をはじめました。

小雨になった夕方、アラモアナショッピングセンターを散歩しました。 「この長い行列は何ですか？　無料のギフトでももらえるの？」 「新しい店がオープンしたからみんな中を見たいだけなのよ。タダのギフトはないのよ」と、並んでいた地元の女性が教えてくれました。

スーパーで買い物して外へ出るとすでに日没後。すわっ、ステファノーティスはベランダに出したまま。　 昨日と今日は寒冷前線の通過のため、夜間は華氏40度(摂氏5度)以下になりました。 内陸地帯では日没後は気温が急速に下がります。 急いで帰って、ステファノーティスを室内に入れねば。 以前、飼い犬の心臓の具合が悪くなり、自家製の食事を作っていた時も、 お腹を空かせているだろうと外出先から家路へ急いだものです。 あの頃とまったく同じ！
