今日もダウンタウンで大きな木と出会いました。ハワイは雪こそはありませんが、歴史を経て風雪に耐えた太い幹には重厚感があり、枝を広げ、小枝には瑞々しい葉っぱをたくさんつけている。私はそんな木が好きです。椰子の木もひょろひょろと何気なく立っているように見えますが、美しく見えるように、また、上から枯れ枝や実が落っこちてこないようによく手入れされています。ダウンタウンのバス停のそばで機械を使って何人もの作業員が働いていました。

今日のホノルルは小雨が降っています。午後、友人のハリーさんのお宅におよばれしてお茶の時間を過ごしました。ハリーさんは、美術や音楽、日舞や茶道、また、お庭の花の手入れなどにも楽しみを持っています。今しがた咲いたバラのような新鮮な心を持ちつづけているのが感じられます。武者小路実篤の掛け軸の言葉をこよなく愛している８５歳のハリーさんは、まだまだこれからも新しい心の花を咲かせ続けることでしょう。
