I think Hotmail doesn’t like it

Michiko-san,

I don't think Hotmail displays Japanese text very well -- your last message
was all garbled. Maybe I'll be able to read it if you put the Japanese text
in an attachment! Were you able to read my attachment in the last email?
I've included it again, just in case.

My sister is an artiste!

Parents are really hard to buy presents for… I think only grandparents top them in toughness-of-gift-buying.

Since we couldn’t think of anything to buy for my parents’ anniversary present, my sister and I decided to paint plates for them. We went to a specialty store near Waikiki called Fire It Up, and at that store, you buy unpainted bisqueware and paint it right there.  The store provides the paint, and they bake it for you.  Continue reading

A Persistent Caller

A few weeks ago, the telephone rang at around 8:30 pm.  I answered the phone, and the man on the other end asked, “May I speak to Mrs. Chang?” I asked, “who is this?” and the man said, “(something, something) fire department.”  I figured this man was a solicitor, since they’re the only ones who call asking for “Mrs. Chang.”  My parents never want to talk to salespeople, so I told the man, “I’m sorry, but she’s busy and can’t talk right now.”

The salesman persisted and said, “Then can I speak to your dad?”  I told him, “he’s busy, too.”  The salesman wouldn’t give up, so I asked him to wait and went to ask my dad. Continue reading

My Worst Experience

When I was little, my mom and sister and I would go with my dad when he had business trips to the mainland.

Once, while my dad was working, my mom took us to an amusement park.  I wanted to ride the merry-go-round, but since you had to buy a ticket for it, my mom wouldn’t let me. She said I could watch it though, so I stood near the ride.

Somehow, I got in line and got on the ride, but I didn’t enjoy it, because I knew my mom would be mad. When the ride was over, a man came around to collect everyone’s tickets, but I didn’t have one. Since I was only about four years old, the ticket man didn’t get mad at me, but I felt even worse.Plus, when I got off the ride, I saw a policeman nearby, and I thought he was going to arrest me.

Wake Up, Wake Up!

I went to California to see my sister graduate with her master’s degree.  My parents and I stayed in a nice little hotel which was very full, because all of the guests were also there to see their kids graduate.  On the morning of the graduation ceremony, I slept in as late as my parents would let me, which was a big mistake.  All of the other guests woke up and showered before me, so when I took a shower, there was no hot water left, and I had to take a cold shower!

Continue reading

Maki Sushi , a Traditional Japanese Grandmother, and Me

My boyfriend’s grandmother wanted to teach me how to make maki sushi, so she asked my boyfriend and me to come over recently.  She said, "Alli, I’m teaching you how to make sushi so that you can make it for Mike, since he loves my sushi so much."  Then she had me make the vinegar sauce, mix it with the rice, season canned tuna with shoyu and sugar, cut the vegetables, and roll the sushi.  It took all morning, because she wanted me to make ten rolls!  While I was making the sushi, Mike’s grandma told him to just watch.

I appreciated that Mike’s grandma took the time to teach me to make maki sushi, but I also think it’s funny what an old-fashioned Japanese lady Mike’s grandma is.  You would think that since her grandson loves her sushi, she would teach him to make it, but she taught her grandson’s girlfriend instead!

I think she still likes him!

My high school friend recently came back from the mainland, so he decided to help judge for the last speech competition during the spring. He used to be on the speech team.  His ex-girlfriend also used to be on the speech team, but even though she’s been in Hawaii this whole year, she has refused to judge any of the competitions.  However, when she found out that my friend was judging, she came to judge at the competition!

After the speech competition was over, the ex-girlfriend invited my friend to go dancing, but he was already planning to go to the speech awards ceremony in the evening.  That evening, a little while after the awards ceremony had started, the ex-girlfriend showed up!  After the awards ceremony, my friend and I were planning on going out for drinks,  and the ex-girlfriend barged in and invited herself along.   How strange!
