A celebration of 4th of July

This is my friend’s condo with a beautiful view of Waikiki.
On 4th of July we spent the day there and had potluck.

My future home

For my future home I would like it to have Japanese feel to it, not only from the inside but also on the outside.  For my garden I think I would love to have small pond with koi, and maybe a beautiful sand garden with bamboo growing around the yard.  I love everything about bamboo it’s feel and the look.  Inside the house I would like to have futons near the floor with tatami style flooring.  The one thing different from Japanese style homes is that I would like to have higher ceilings and central air.  Maybe a small fountain within the house would be nice as well.  I think this would be a lifelong  improvement depending on mood, but like anything Japanese they will always strive for perfection.  If you have ever seen the movie “Kill Bill” when she comes to kill the first girl in the Japanese garden, well in that scene is the garden of my dreams.  One day maybe, a guy can dream can’t he.

I will tell you about how I imagine a doctor should be.

I have kind of been thinking about why there are doctors and healthcare. I always came up with the same answer. That is, for the sake of the patient. However, somehow, this answer is not enough. They are not just for the sake of the patient; I have come to think that they for the sake of people (everybody). This is because I don’t think a doctor’s job is not just to heal illnesses. I have come to think that the important job of a doctor is protecting people’s health.

So then, what can we, as doctors, do for people to protect their health? I thought about a lot of things. There is one thing that there is no mistake about. When you are dying, being able to say, “I had a good life!” is the the best thing there is. That is a good way to die. In order to die well, you have to live well. When I think about this,  I remember my grandmother.

My grandmother ran a small fish market called, “Nakasada.” Even though it was a just small fish market, it had a long history of almost 50 years. My grandmother loved me with all her heart. When I came home, she brought over some delicious fresh fish and said, “Let Masaya eat this.” Even this grandmother’s health is deteriorating recently, and she has had to go to the hospital a lot. So, finaly, the doctor advised her to stop the hard work of being a fishmonger. My grandmother once followed the doctor’s advice and stopped working. However, four days after her shop was closed, my mother went to my grandmother’s house and there were fish piled all over the shop. My mother was surprised. My grandmother said, “I couldn’t sit still for four days. Even if it shortens my life by one year, that is fine. I will be a fishmonger.” And so, the fish shop Nakasada was back in business after being closed for four days.

My grandmother was set on living life on her own terms. She gave me courage because of the way she lived her life. She gave me the confidence to believe in myself. I want to be a doctor who is able to help people and live a good life.  I am obsessed with becoming a doctor that is more concerned with how people can live a satisfying life than making them live as long as possible.

Izakaya

I love eating Izakaya style food.  The atmosphere is very inviting, it makes me feel like I’m a part of Japan.  I love Japanese food it’s so delicous.  When I think about some of the other cultural foods available to me, I think once in awhile is ok but everyday is to much for me to handle.  While I really love Korean, Chinese, French cuisine I think that they season food to heavily and couldn’t eat it everyday.  Where as Japanese only season to bring out the essence of the dish.  I think that in most cultures the sauce is what makes the dish.  Richness of this style makes it very difficult for me to eat this style everyday even though I love  them both.  Sorry let me get back to my meal, well we had an excellent waitress who tried to educate me on the finer details of sake drinking.  She brought over a shot glass with a box that catches the overflow.  When she did this I thought she made a mistake and spilled on accident.  I didn’t know that this is how sake is really supposed to be poured how interesting I thought.  This is the kind of experience I really like it’s like I’m visiting Japan but in Hawaii.  Oh yes by the way the restaurants name was Gaku.  I had so many different dishes most of which I cannot pronounce yet so I’m not going to list.  We had Ootoro man I love that fish but it’s flavors are so oily that I think to much of this would make me sick.  Maguro on the other hand I can eat for days.  I will have to make a trip to Japan to compare.  I have no doubt that I will love every experience I encounter there.
