More Of My Bad Memory

Tonight, when I was driving home on the freeway, a car in the middle lane honked its horn, so I looked over to see what was happening.  There was a man driving his car so it was pacing mine, and the man was looking at me and grinning!  I looked at him for two long seconds, but I didn’t recognize him, so I looked away.  He didn’t look like any of my high school classmates, so I had no idea who he could be.  Later on, I saw him get off the freeway, and I noticed he was driving a BMW.  Then it occurred to me that the man might have been the guy who sold me my car!  That man had said that he was planning on buying a BMW after he sold me my Porsche.  I felt so bad!  That man had probably been driving behind me for a while, and then got excited when he realized that I was driving his old car, and so he wanted to say hi.  I wish I had remembered his face! A Misunderstanding

In April this year, all the high schools in the state participated in the final speech competition of the school year.  I was a judge, and while other judges were in the first round, I had free time, so I read a magazine.  Soon after I had started reading, a guy I didn’t know came up to me and said, “Excuse me, am I bothering you?”  I replied, “No, it’s okay,” so the guy sat down next to me and started chatting.

The guy told me that he was a senior in college, and then asked, “How old are you?”  I told him that I had graduated from high school in 1997, and he exclaimed, “Wow!  That’s old!”  Afterwards, the guy was talking about using computers, and he mentioned that he was terrible at it, so I said, “But you guys are supposed to be good at using computers!”  I really meant, sarcastically, “Nowadays, young people are all supposed to be good at using computers.  How can you not know!”  While that guy had been talking about computers, I had been thinking about his “Wow, that’s old!” comment from before. In March, I learned how to make delicious tea from Mari Takiguchi-san.  She was kind enough to email me instructions, and afterwards, I was so excited　that I bought a new teapot and teacups so I could make tea properly.  I made　tea two or three times a week all month, and I’m still practicing how to　make delicious tea.  It’s a good thing I had all that tea from my　Fukubukuro bag!

　三月に、滝口真理さんからおいしいお茶の入れ方を習いました。私に、お茶の入れ方を優しくメールしてくださいました。本当にうれしくなって、後で、おいしいお茶を作るために、新しい急須と湯飲みを買いました。今月は、一週間に、二三回、お茶を作りました。でも、まだお茶の入れ方を練習しています。幸い、今年、買った福袋に沢山お茶が入っていました。 Continue reading →

 
February journal

On Valentine’s Day weekend, I got to go on a free trip to Maui!  It wasn’t romantic or anything; I was helping out my high school speech coach by judging for the tournament being held there.  I saw a whole bunch of great performances, so it was really fun.  A couple of the high school guys thought it was neat that I’d brought a video game magazine to read.  Alli, my friend who was also on the trip, said she wouldn’t want to be told that, but I thought it was funny!

　バレンタインデーの週末、無料のマウイ島旅行に出かけました！　ロマンチックな旅行じゃありません。マウイ島で開催されたスピーチトーナメントで、私の高校のスピーチ審査員としてお手伝いしたのです。沢山、凄い演技を見ることができたので、本当に楽しみました。幾人かの男子生徒は、私が、ビデオゲームの雑誌を持って来たことを格好いいと思ったようです。しかし、その時、やはり、マウイに来ていた友人が、「アリー、それはだめです！」と言いました。しかし、面白いと思いました！ Continue reading →

 
　日本では、桜（さくら）が　咲（さき始（はじ）めたそうです。テレビのニュースで見ました。
ところで、ハワイには　桜の木がありますか？　見たことがありますか？　もしあれば、いっしょに見に行きましょうか？　以前（いぜん）、ハワイ大学の近くに桜の木があると、聞いたことがあります。確（たし）かではありませんが、、、。ごぞんじですか？

　本当にハワイ大学が桜の木がありますか。知りませんでした！見たい！
土曜日に、「L’Epicier」で、新しい桜のお茶を見ました。買いたいと思いましたが、買いませんでした。妹が、「家に、十分、お茶はあります！」と言ったからです。妹は正しいです。。。まだ、福袋のお茶が、たくさんあります。 Continue reading →

• 会議の最中に、これ書きましたので、多分、変な小話でしょう。

I recently read a collection of essays by Sawamura Sadako.  They’re stories from her childhood, and they’re all very interesting.  Many times, when I finished reading one of her essays, I thought: wait, I want to know more! My Japanese friend told me that Japanese people like their stories to end at the most interesting point.  But Americans tend to want to know a little more afterwards — that’s why sometimes American movie endings go a little too long.  It’s not as artistic… but I want to know more!

　最近、沢村貞子さんのエッセー集を読みました。それは彼女の子供時代のお話しです。全てが、とても興味深いものでした。彼女のそれぞれのエッセーを読み終わった時、何度となく、「待って！　もっと知りたい！」と思いました。日本の友人によれば、日本人は、エッセーがもっとも興味深いところで終わる事が好きだそうです。しかし、アメリカ人は、その後をもう少し知りたいと思う傾向があります。そんな理由から、時々、アメリカ映画の終わりの部分は少し長すぎます。芸術的じゃありません・・・　でも、もっと知りたい！ Continue reading →

 
This year, my resolution is to read mangas!  Usually, I fall asleep while studying Japanese.  But since reading mangas is fun, I’ll probably read a lot, and I won’t fall asleep.  Then I’ll be studying Japanese while reading mangas!

Also, asking Michiko-san and Shuzo-san manga questions is fun.  Since the characters use informal speech, Michiko-san and Shuzo-san laugh and tell me not to speak that way.
