Motivation

I don`t always have the motivation to pursue my interests. For example, I`ve wanted to be a writer for quite a while, but it wasn`t until now that I`ve begun to take an interest in recording my thoughts. At first I began to write in this blog solely for language practice, but I feel motivated now to write more deeply. Why? Becuase I have the instant gratification of someone reading my words and therefore my words have a definite purpose.

So it is with everything. If we don`t have an immediate use for something, it becomes useless to all but the rare long-minded thinker. I`ve experienced this often with students. For most students, the great majority of information taught in schools appers useful only insofar as it can raise their grade. So, it is naturally forgotten as soon as possible. This is a human survival instinct. We focus on what is important for our immediate survival and prosperity. Is it a mark of enlightenment, then, to be able to find purpose in anything that one wants to do, without needing external motivation?
