先週末から、ベランダのひまわりの種を食べに来るようになったリスは、手、足、口をこれ以上くっつけようがないといった姿勢で食べます。その食べ方にもちゃんと決まりがあって、手前から始まって皿の右半分を食べると終わり。
他のリスは、いわば、しっちゃかめっちゃか、手当たり次第、いや、口当たり次第に食べて、ひまわりの種の皮を当たり一面に散らしてしまいますが、このリスが食べた後はごみなしといった具合。
その話をノーマンにすると、「そのリスちゃんは O. C. (obsessive compulsive 強迫神経症の事。何事も超きちんとしていなければならない神経症）だ」。そして丸まって食べる様子を見て、漫画をかきました。月夜に浮かれて腹鼓みを打つ狸に似てなくもないのでポンポコちゃんの名前がつきました。

Hi, Jackie, I too, saw squirrels in California for the first time, when my husband and I visited Napa Valley from Hawaii. When we lived in Shoshone, Idaho, I had several very tame squirrels. I could touch them. I think that because Shoshone is a very small town (pop. 1,249), people and squirrels are close. Here in Omaha, Nebraska, I am unable to make them tame enough to come to me. It may be because Omaha is too busy a city to relax squirrels! Are you going to a college in CAL? I hope that squirrels in the college can be tame and you can tough them.

私も夫とハワイからカリフォルニアのナパバリーを訪問した時に初めてリスを見ました。アイダホ州のショーションでは、とても慣れたリスがいて、触る事ができました。ショーションは小さい町なので、人とリスは仲良く住んでいます。ここ、オマハではリスは近寄ってきません。おそらく、オマハは都会なので、リスもゆったりしていないのでしょう。
ジャッキーさんはカリフォルニアの大学に行きますか？その大学では、リスは慣れていて、触れるといいですね。

There was a website devoted to “Squirrel Fishing.” College boys conducted a “study” of using a fishing pole with a peanut as bait. They measured things like how close to them they could “reel in” a squirrel, how high they could lift him off the ground, latched on to the peanut, before he let go. It was fun to read their “Scientific report.” Maybe you can do a follow-up study!
