The wife in the comic walks three steps behind her husband, giving the appearance of humility, but actually, she stays behind him out of convenience–she wants to avoid the wind. This reflects the idea that Japanese wives may outwardly appear humble and submissive, while in reality, they are the ones in control. It is from behind that they “run the show.” It is the wife who manages a Japanese household, right down to the pocketbook. When a Japanese husband needs money, he goes to his wife. In short, although outward appearances have lead to the popular belief that Japanese men are dominant and controlling over their wives, in actuality, it is possible that the Japanese wife may, in fact, hold more control than an American wife.
