Haiku Poem –

(Jim Woodhull)

silently hunting

gliding through the blue water

the tiger shark

People often have the wrong impression of sharks. Their fear is that they are waiting for people to go into the water which is false. The tiger shark is probably the most common one in Hawaii that is usually following the scent of a large animal that is dying such as a turtle, dolphin or whale. They will also follow fishing boats into the harbor if they are dumping their waste which they are not suppose to do. Generally speaking they are about 20 to 30 miles off shore hunting the big fish like tuna and marlin. They don’t come normally in the shallow areas as there is not enough food for them. Last week there was a turtle that had died and a very large tiger shark came in and grabbed it and took it away! They do serve a very important service as they eat the dying or dead larger animals.
