first year I am blind
slowly I see the beauty
subtle four seasons

喜びの目から鱗や四季の花
よろこびの　めから うろこや　しきのはな

Since I was born and raised in Michigan I was used to very distinct four seasons. After I moved to Hawaii I was not able to tell the difference between the four seasons for the first year that I lived here. Going into the second year I noticed that in every season there are always certain flowers that bloom. Now after 30 years I can easily tell that in the summer certain trees bloom that are usually green other times of the year and also it is easy to see when taking a drive that some flowers are either blooming or have already bloomed and changed color. Although I am very bad at the names of flowers this is something that I really enjoy about Hawaii. I really believe that a person needs to live here at least two years to appreciate it.

　私は、生まれも、育ちもミシガンです。ミシガンには明確な四季の変化がありました。ですから、ハワイに引っ越した後、最初の一年間、私は、ハワイの季節の変化がわかりませんでした。二年、経ってから、それぞれの季節には、いつも決まった花が咲いていることに気付きました。現在、ハワイに引っ越してから、三十年が経ちました。いつもは緑なのに、夏になると、花が咲きほこる木をたやすく言い当てることが出来ますし、車を運転している時、花の咲いているところと、咲き終わって、色が変わってしまったところがよくわかります。花の名前を覚えるのは得意でなくても、これが、私のハワイの楽しみ方の一つです。ハワイの季節を楽しむには、少なくとも二年間は住むことが必要だと思います。
