灯籠や思い出連ね沖へ発つ
とうろうや　おもいでつらね　おきへたつ

For the holiday of Memorial Day, there is a tradition in Hawaii. This tradition includes first building small boats. Then, a description of memories of loved ones is written on the boats. Finally, there is a ceremony where people gather and the boats are set adrift in the sea. Part of the idea came from Japan. So, the ceremony is led by some Japanese every year. The boats are actually floating lanterns which glow upon the ocean.

　５月の最終月曜日は、メモリアルデー（戦没将兵追悼記念日）です。この日、ハワイでは、伝統の行事があります。この行事では、まず、それぞれの人が、家の形をした小舟を作ります。そして、この小舟に、愛する人への想いを書き記します。最後に、人々は寄り集まって、小舟を海に流す式典を行います。この行事のアイデアの一部は日本から来ました。ですから、この式典は、毎年、何人かの日本人によって執り行われます。ちなみに、この小舟、実は、海面を漂いながら、明かりを灯す灯籠です。
