Don’t write using the 5-7-5 form. The haiku end up sounding way to long to anyone who is used to reading them in Japanese. The reason is that English uses fewer syllables to communicate meaning on average, and those syllables are often longer in duration.

Within the English haiku community, there is actually no fixed standard for length, but most every poet would agree that 5-7-5 is too long.

Many poets like to think of the lines in their haiku in terms of beats instead of syllables. A beat is essentially where the stress falls in a given phrase when you say it aloud. If you want to use beats, then go 2-3-2. Here is an example:

wilderness home
beyond rolling blue flame
frozen earth

The syllables here come out to be 4-6-3, yet it still sounds good because “wilderness” has only one beat (the first syllable) in spite of being three syllables long.
