今日の四字熟語は、一知半解です。辞書には、「知識が十分に自分の物になっていないこと、生かじりの知識」と記されています。例えば、「彼は、一知半解の知識を振りかざし、口角泡を飛ばして議論する」などと使います。アメリカ人は、アイロニックと言う言葉を使うのが好きです。そんな人が多いです。しかし，大体、一知半解の理解に基づく使い方です。本当の意味が消えるほど、新しい使い方が広がってしまいました。

Today’s yoji jukugo is icchihankai. It refers to someone having insufficient knowledge of a subject, or to someone doing or saying something without fully understanding it. For example, you could say “during the discussion, he was throwing around icchihankai technical terms.”

A very common case of icchihankai in the US is the word ironic. People love to use this word, but they don’t really understand what it means. The usage has widened to such an extent that the real meaning has almost disappeared, and even educated people may not be able to explain it.
