Recently the weather has changed in Wahiawa. It doesn’t get quite as cold during the night, and some days it gets hot when the sun is out. One day, my neighbor John came into my house and said, “Wow, your house is a lot cooler than ours”. At first, I thought I was receiving a compliment. I soon realized that he was actually referring to the temperature. I remembered that he often complains about the heat, and sometimes spends a few hours in the Starbucks in Mililani just for the air conditioning. On the other hand, I didn’t hear a single comment from him or his wife about the cold during the past two months. It seems our houses are indeed quite different, and that ours is going to be nice for the summer months to come.


　気温の変化についてお話します。最近、ワヒアワのお天気は変わりました。二月頃と違って、夜間、そんなに寒くなりません。そして、太陽の出ている時は、かなり暑くなるようになりました。ある日、お隣りのジョンさんが、 私の家にやって来ました。そして、「わぁ、俺の家より、もの凄くクールだ」と言いました。最初、私は、お世辞を言ったのかと思いました。しかし、すぐ勘違いしたことに気付きました。彼は、私の家が、かっこいいと言ったのではなく、温度のことを言ったのでした。彼は、いつも暑い、暑いと、ぼやいていました。又、しばしば、エアコンの効いた、ミリラニのスターバックスに行って、何時間もねばっていました。そんなことを思い出しました。ところで、この二ヶ月間、ジョンさんからも、奥さんからも、寒いと云う不満を聞いたことは、一度もありません。私の家は、ジョンさんの家とは、かなり違うようです。私の家は、これから夏に向かって、快適な生活を約束してくれると思います。
