Hot Plates

At Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse the plates that the steaks are served on are 500 degrees. I always advise people not to touch the plate, unless they like to get burned. That being said, people do touch the plates and get burned. I think sometimes it is just dumb human nature to do something your advised not to do. The thing that I find most interesting when observing this situation, is how people react to the pain of touching a 500 degree plate. The Japanese people are extremly funny to me, if they touch the plate with both hands, then they immediately grab their earlobes and make a really crazy looking face at the other people, I guess this advices them not to touch the plate. Versus say American tourist, who usually always want to test exactly how hot a 500 plate is and when they touch the plate with boths hands, they immediately pull back and start shaking their hands up and down and then blow on them and then say something stupid like”Boy that sure is hot.”Yah I just explained to you not to touch it, because it is a hot plate, but I have never once seen anyone grab their earlobes and make crazy faces like the Japanese do. If I could videotape it I would put it on YouTube and you would probably roll over laughing about it.

When I was small and burned my fingers, I was told by my mother to hold earlobes because they were usually always cold. My husband says that his Swedish grandma said the same thing. He thinks that it may have been to keep us occupy doing something to take our minds off the pain.

Yesterday, I mentioned to a guess about the earlobe thing and they responded with a similiar answer to Yoko’s. They said it is because the earlobe is a cool part of the body and that is why they do it. I think it still looks really funny however when I see them do this.
