stung!

I took my college friend to Lanikai, which is a shallow and warm beach perfect for just floating around. Unfortunately, my friend got stung by a Portuguese Man of War — probably the only one in the entire area! Mike caught it on my slipper — can you see it? The blue bubble is its body, and the faint blue thread crossing from the bottom of the slipper to the strap is its stinging tentacle.

Aha! That’s how the monster looks. Thank you for the picture. Do you know why it is called “Portuguese Man of War?”

Good question! I actually didn’t know why either, but this is what Wikipedia says:

The Man O’ War is named for its air bladder, which looks similar to the helmet of Portuguese soldiers.

Thank you, Allison, for the information. The helmet the word refers to must be worn by Portuguese soldiers in the 14th to 15th centuries when the country was expanding, and I guess, people whose countries were run over by these soldiers called the stinging jelly fish “Portuguese Man O’ War.” Thank you also for reminding me of going into search engines such as Wikipedia and Google.
