My First Snow

I have grown up in Hawaii all my life, and there is no snow here.  When I was 8, I visited my grandparents in Wisconsin during the winter, and I saw snow for the first time.  I loved it!  My uncle took me cross country skiing, but I didn’t like it very much because it was really hard.  I built a snowman outside our motel, and called him Snowman Bob.  On Christmas, I got a present from him.  How mysterious… When I go to college in a few years, I would like to live somewhere that has snow.

　私は、生まれてからずっとハワイで育ちました。ここには雪がありません。８才の冬、ウィンスコンシン州の祖父母を訪ねた時、私は初めて雪を見ました。私は雪が大好きでした！おじさんはクロスカントリースキーに連れて行ってくれました。しかし、それは本当に難しかったので、私はあまり好きになれませんでした。私は、母と泊まっていたモーテルの外で雪だるまを作りました。そして彼を『雪だるまボブ』と呼びました。クリスマスの日、私は『雪だるまボブ』からプレゼントをもらいました。何と不思議なことでしょう…。２、３年したら私は大学に行きます。どこか雪のあるところに住みたいです。 Continue reading →

Learning Japanese

When I was in elementary school I first started taking Japanese lessons from a sensei who came to my class once a week.  I got interested, and decided to join her afterschool program every day.  I learned simple phrases to say and hirigana.  After I graduated from elementary, I continued to come to the afterschool classes for a while.  But I got too busy, and decided to focus on other things.

 When I started high school in August 2003, I started from the beginning again.  I didn’t remember a lot, but I remembered some things from before. Now I am in my second year, and I have learned a lot since then.  I can read and write both hirigana and katakana, and have started learning basic kanji. I can introduce myself easily, and talk about activities I do.  I know quite a few simple nouns and adjectives as well.  I will continue throughout my high school career, and hope to learn more.  I am traveling to Japan this year, and I look forward to speaking Japanese.
