Winter

It’s difficult to play a solo anyway. Just the fact that you are all by yourself, with everyone staring at you and expecting you to perform for them. But it’s worse when you are also standing in front of an orchestra, full of your friends and people you know. This adds nervous feelings towards the front and the back. Plus, at an orchestra concert the audience tends to be bigger then a others. When I played twice last week, I was pretty nervous! It helped a little that I really loved the piece. Vivaldi’s Winter from the Four Seasons is a gorgeous movement with a lot of beauty and flash. It’s hard, and I had to practice a lot. But once I got it down, each time it only got easier to play. Sometimes I just try to listen to myself and enjoy it, instead of worrying so much. But the playing part is not what makes me nervous. I’m just worried about what else I could possibly do to mess this up. Of course, I could trip while walking either on stage or off. I’ve done that before, by the way. I could also drop my bow in the middle of a bunch of fast notes, either from weakness or possibly my sweaty fingers. That’s the worse one: sweaty fingers make it absolutely impossible to play! Plus, something could go wrong with my hair, or my clothes, or pretty much anything else. When I’m thinking of things that could possibly happen, I’m definitely not thinking rationally. Once the first one was over, it made me feel better because it went really well! And no matter how nervous I felt, it apparently didn’t affect my performance because no one even suspected. And afterwards, my friend gave me a dozen purple roses and I got tons of compliments from all these people for days after! However, the day of my second performance I woke up SICK. Luckily, it wasn’t that bad yet, and I was able to drug myself up pretty well to avoid anything worse. All in all, the performance went just as well, as far as I could tell. And I am just glad now that this whole thing is over and I can relax for a while. It was so much fun!

Purple
My favorite color is purple. I am very obsessed with it! Every one of my friends knows this because I make it very obvious. Almost everything I own is the color purple! Whenever I see anything purple, no matter if it’s a car or a trash can, I get very excited. My room is painted purple, most of my clothes are purple, and even my textbook covers are purple.
I have liked this color for as long as I can remember, and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without it. For example, when I go shopping and there is a choice of color, I always choose purple. If I didn’t like purple so much, then i would always have trouble deciding. This way, the decision is easy. Purple!
Some people think I have gone a little too far, for example with my jewelry collection or my nail polish. But I don’t think there is any harm in this obsession. It makes me happy, so I will continue to love purple more than any other color! Continue reading

Violin
.jpg)
Ever since I was born, I heard music all the time. My mom teaches violin and also plays violin in the Honolulu Symphony, so I was surrounded by it. I got curious, and started playing when I was four years old. I’ve been playing ever since. I play in my school orchestra at Moanalua High School, and also Hawaii Youth Symphony Orchestra. My conductors are strict, but inspiring. I also take lessons from my mom, regularly learning new pieces and performing for competitions and festivals. I don’t want to study violin as a career, but I want to continue with it as a hobby for the rest of my life. Continue reading

はじめて(初めて) の ゆき(雪)
My First Snow
I have grown up in Hawaii all my life, and there is no snow here. When I was 8, I visited my grandparents in Wisconsin during the winter, and I saw snow for the first time. I loved it! My uncle took me cross country skiing, but I didn’t like it very much because it was really hard. I built a snowman outside our motel, and called him Snowman Bob. On Christmas, I got a present from him. How mysterious… When I go to college in a few years, I would like to live somewhere that has snow.
Continue reading

Learning Japanese
Learning Japanese
When I was in elementary school I first started taking Japanese lessons from a sensei who came to my class once a week. I got interested, and decided to join her afterschool program every day. I learned simple phrases to say and hirigana. After I graduated from elementary, I continued to come to the afterschool classes for a while. But I got too busy, and decided to focus on other things.
When I started high school in August 2003, I started from the beginning again. I didn’t remember a lot, but I remembered some things from before. Now I am in my second year, and I have learned a lot since then. I can read and write both hirigana and katakana, and have started learning basic kanji. I can introduce myself easily, and talk about activities I do. I know quite a few simple nouns and adjectives as well. I will continue throughout my high school career, and hope to learn more. I am traveling to Japan this year, and I look forward to speaking Japanese. Continue reading
