CHANGE

As time passes life changes. When I was younger I experienced four seasons, Summer, Winter, Fall and Spring. There have been changes, since I was young, in the weather. Now I experience more winter and fall with very little summer and spring.

When I was younger, I use to play on the slides and swings at the playground, play football with my buddies in the park, walk with my girlfriend at night at the peer. Now-a-days, children and young adults can’t do much of anything without having to look over their shoulders every five minutes to make sure they aren’t the next kidnapping victim or target for murder.

When I was younger I use to watch cartoons and television shows that made sense, that was appropriate for a young viewer, that my parents didn’t have to block. Today, parents are afraid to let their children sit in front of a television or computer by themselves, afraid that they will get hooked on pornography and killing.

Sone things change, some things don’t. One thing that I’ve noticed that hasn’t changed much is racism. When I was young, I couldn’t walk down a certain street or I’d be beaten up. I would be teased at school because of the color of my skin. I had to keep my face from bus windows because our school bus would be stoned. I would be called names other than my own. Policemen would try to hurt my friends and I because we weren’t the same color as them. Today, we still haven’t gotten past crimes of race.

People of all colors and races are suffering from racism. Not only is there a lack of regard for animals, there’s also a lack of regard for humans. Just as animals are precious, so are humans. Just as animals have a right to freedom, so do humans. Sure, we all make mistakes. But isn’t it time we start to love? Racism is a destructive force that kills everything in it’s path. Not just the body, but the spirit and a hope.

Question. What are we going to do about it.

What I do is call it out when I see it. There is nothing I love more than publicly humiliating a racist.

Everyone gets touchy when racism comes up, but we shouldn’t. It is a big issue. As is all prejudice (religious, sexual orientation, etc, etc.). We need to stare it directly in the eyes and shut it down. There is no room for it any more. In the US, you probably already understand this, we have this idea that everyone’s opinions are equal. But they really aren’t. And unfortunately we tend to give everyone’s personal views equal billing. We really need to drag all of the hidden-in-plain-site racism and prejudice out of the woodworks and dismantle it.

I am sorry for the things that happened to you when you were growing up. I grew up in Southern California. For the most part people were pretty decent, but we had Mexican gangs at my school. They loved picking on the white kids. My best friend was Mexican so I was able to see the gang kids for what they were. Just ignorant kids trying to find their place. I can’t say that I really understand what you went through other than to say that I do think about those situations and it bothers me too. If I ever have kids I am going to train them to be vigilant about those situations and make sure they take a stand whenever prejudice presents itself.

Are you living in Japan? Have you had to deal with anything out here? I have seen it, but usually it is just the older generations or the “Yankees”. Uneducated people trying to blame others for their own problems. Most people in Japan are very warm, including the older generation. Japanese are peaceful, but unfortunately apathetic to the core. They don’t think anything bad will ever happen again (just generalizing). If Japan as a culture doesn’t start paying attention to their politicians intentions, the peaceful nation will be a thing of the past. But that is another issue all together.
