My Japanese lessons

I was at work the other day and needed to speak to the Japanese Coast Guard about a ship that was transmitting an electronic distress alert, when I call them, they had already contacted the vessels owner and confirmed it was a false activation. He then said something in Japanese and I asked him in Japanese what the word was, he was so impressed, or maybe surprised, that I knew how ask him in Japanese, he said about three times that my Japanese is so good. He never did tell me what the word meant. My co-worker was also a little shocked, she couldn’t believe that I just said the phase without thinking about it. So glad I’m still taking my lessons.

    Did you say “ima nanto osshaimashitaka (What did you just say)?” and “eigo de ittekudasai (Can you say in English)” or something like that? I can’t help being curious.

    I said the word, then “Eigo de, nan to iimasu ka”. Not sure if that spelling correct. I believe the word he used was the type of the vessel the boat was, such as car carrier or fuel ship. It didn’t really matter since it was a false alert and not even close to Japan or the US.
