Riots

Thank you Yoko, for the comment and welcoming me back. The one experience that stood out to me the most was the riots in Seoul. While I have lived in big cities before, like Barcelona, Osaka and even visited Tokyo. I have never experienced rioting before. It was a major reason for my return, while no Americans were hurt and the protest against US beef imports was directed more towards their current administrations decisions. It was still an unnerving experience. I was caught off guard when I entered the City Hall area as it was completely surrounded by waves and waves of police in riot gear. The man on the microphone was shouting something in Korean that I could not understand; yet I could understand he was angry. I had never heard someone so upset before, it actually made me upset. Currently I am taking ‘Anthropology of the City’ course at HPU and I hope this helps me to understand more of what I was feeling and how to handle such situations, as I want to get into public diplomacy. I hope to return to Seoul next year for the Harvard Project for International Relations(HPAIR), this time a little more mentally prepared for such extreme situations.

After I wrote the comment, I was a little concerned. Because I realized that you would be still in Korea, if you’d spent there for 6 months as planned originally. I appreciate your straightforwardness. Now, I remember the news of riots. I don’t know how I would react or respond if I were in such situations. I hope your studies at HPU are really helpful. It will be great to follow your progress.
