Working In Honolulu

I’m in the Coast Guard and really enjoy my job. My last assignment was mostly law enforcement and drug interdiction, it was exciting and I’m glad I did it, but really glad its over. My current assignment is as a Search and Rescue coordinator and this is what I really enjoy, helping people in distress.

Just recently, I worked a case involving 3 people missing off an island down by Majuro Atoll. They were missing for 2 days before the family contacted the Coast Guard. We launched an airplane from Honolulu and I worked up a search pattern for plane to search. It did take a while for the plane to arrive at the island, rest and refuel, but they found the people drifting in their boat within an hour of searching, which is unbelievable considering the size of the area they went missing, the amount time they were missing and the unpredictable currents. They were thirsty and exhausted, but otherwise okay.

At times its slow and nothing is happening, but other times it gets so busy that you will find yourself doing five things at once. The best part is when you find out that everybody involved is safe. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case, but I still cannot think of anything else that I would rather do than this.

I wanted to add a picture, but I can’t find anything at the moment.
