What most of all Nebraskans are excited about is every, single movement of the University of Nebraska Lincoln’s football team. “The Cornhuskers” is the team’s nickname, which is also the state’s nickname. The team’s fans behave just like fans of pro-baseball teams or soccer teams in Japan, or high school football teams in Hawaii. Because the Huskers have not been doing well in this season, the fans are not happy, to say the least. Then, in October, the team lost, big time, to a team which was regarded as weak (i. e., low in the division, 116th out of 119th!). The fans exploded. The University of Nebraska’s chancellor himself had to appear in the media to announce the firing of the athletic director! To be frank, I was not much interested in the sports scene, but was forced to pay attention to what was going on because all day, the only news you heard was about the Huskers. I learned that the wins and losses of the local college football team could not be ignored. Obviously, the local economy is affected greatly by that.


ネブラスカ州民がこぞって熱狂するのは、ネブラスカ大学リンカーン校のフットボールチームの一挙一動です。

チームのニックネームはハスカーで、これはトウモロコシの皮を剥く人の意で、ネブラスカ州のニックネームでもあるのです。ファンの様子は、日本のプロ野球やサッカーファン、ハワイの高校フットボールファンに負けずとも劣らずです。

このハスカーチームが今季成績不振で先が思いやられていたところ、10月に弱いとみられていた或るチームに大敗して、ファンの不満が一挙に爆発。とうとうネブラスカ大学の学長自らメデイアに会見して、大学運動部長の解任を発表しました。

白状すると、私はさして興味を持っていなかったのですが、この解任発表の日、テレビは一日中、そのニュースで持ちきり、あらためて事の重大さを悟りました。

ニュースを追っていて解ったのは、ハスカーチームの成績はフットボールだけに止まらず、州全体の経済に少なからぬ影響を与えるらしいということでした。チームが勝ち続けていると、ファンもつい財布の紐を緩めるということでしょう。
