Great Experience

This week, a class of students from all over eastern Asia came to my Asian History class. They were studying English as a second language, and my teacher thought it would be a great experience if we could talk to these kids about how life was in Hawaii. Four japanese boys made their way over to my desk and asked if they coud talk to me. I nodded my head, and since they were in an exchange class, they spoke English to me. I knew they would be very akward speaking english, I thought I would play a little trick. They asked me in very shaky english, “what do you do afuta skuru?” and I replied “Gakko no atode, yakyuu o shimasu” They went ballistic, obviously happy they had someone who could talk in their native tounge. They asked me if I too was from Japan, and how I had learned how to speak so well. We had a very interesting conversation, and I ended up learning about their life just as much as they learned about mine. It was a very good experience for both of us, I’m sure.
