Saru Mo Ki Kara Ochiru

Finally I got a great moment to use one of the phrases that Michiko and Shuzo had taught me. Last night at the restaurant I had a party of six Japanese guests come in and everything was going perfect with their dinner until the end. When I was getting their oshibori(hot towels) ready the tray I was using was not quite big enough, but I thought it might hold all six plates with the towels on it. However, it didn’t! About halfway through dropping off the hot towels the tray became very unstable and I dropped everything onto the floor. Everyone turned and looked at me. I was a little embarrassed and said “gomenasai”, then as I began to say ” Saru mo …..” Even before I could finish this phrase the whole table began chanting the exact needed words for this phrase and they filled in “Ki kara ochiru” really loud. They began to praise me for knowing such a phrase, but I declined their praises humbly and said I was only trying my best.
