  I had spent the first 25 years of my life in mainland United States, in the Midwestern states of Wisconsin and Iowa.  Then I moved to the East Coast to attend graduate school in Connecticut.   I was playing in a summer orchestra in Colorado when I auditioned for a job in Hawaii, playing violin in the Honolulu Symphony.  I was so excited when I got the job that I called several of my friends.

  One friend asked me, "Do you know where Hawaii is?"

  I answered, "Of course I do.   It's right past California."

  She laughed and told me to go and get a globe.  She warned me that the distance across the mainland United States was the same as the distance
between California and Hawaii.  I was shocked.  I told her this could not be true, because on maps in my schoolbooks the Hawaiian Islands were right off the coast of California.  Of course, the maps put Hawaii on an INSERT, a little box off the coast,  so they wouldn't have to print two pages of
ocean.  Here I was, preparing to move to a new place, and I had NO IDEA
where it really was!


　私は人生の初めの２５年間をアメリカ中西部、アイオア州ウィンスコンシンで過ごしました。それからコネチカットの大学院に通うために、東海岸に引っ越しました。ハワイのホノルル交響楽団のヴァイオリン奏者としての仕事に就く為にオーディションを受けた時、私はコロラドでのサマーオーケストラで弾いていました。私はハワイでの仕事を得てとても興奮していたので、何人かの友人に電話をしました。

　の友達が言いました。「ハワイがどこにあるのか知っているの？」。私は、「もちろん知ってるわよ。カリフォルニアを越えたところよ」と答えました。

　すると彼女は笑って私に地球儀を持ってくるようにと言いました。彼女は私に、カリフォルニアとハワイの距離は、アメリカ本土を横断するのと同じ距離があることを警告したのです。私はショックでした。学校の教科書の地図に載っていたハワイ諸島はカリフォルニア海岸のすぐそばだったので、そんなはずはないと彼女に言いました。当然ハワイは地図の差し込みページに入れられていて、海岸から離れた小さな囲みの中にあったのです。そうすることで海を２ページに渡って印刷しなくてもよかったわけです。それで私は、ハワイが実際にどこにあるかなどと考えることなく新天地に引っ越してきて、ここにいるというわけです。
