Since my Japanese grandparents helped to raise me, I’ve known a little
about the language and culture since I was little, but I didn’t get really excited about learning Japanese until I graduated college and came back home.  After I came back, I visited my grandparents a couple of days a week, and when I was there, we’d watch programs like Soko Ga Shiritai, Women of the Onsen, and Merry Christmas in Summer.  I really liked those!  Soko Ga Shiritai, especially, made me want to learn more Japanese and about the culture.  The episodes about people’s everyday lives and the ones where they showcase handmade goods are my favorite.

　私は日系の祖父母に育てられましたので、子供の頃から日本の言葉や文化について、少し知っていました。しかし、メインランドの大学を卒業してハワイに戻るまで、日本語を学ぶことを、そんなに楽しいことだとは思いませんでした。私はハワイに戻ってから、週に１、２回、祖父母の家を訪ねました。その時、祖父母と共に、「そこが知りたい」や「温泉へ行こう」、「メリー　クリスマス　イン　サマー」という日本語テレビ番組を見ました。大好きでした！特に、「そこが知りたい」という番組を見て、私は、日本語や日本文化をもっと学びたいと思うようになりました。日本の人達の日々の暮らしのエピソードや、その人達が見せてくれる手作り作品のエピソードが、私は大好きです。
