After highschool I began working construction.  I was building a new garbage dump for our county.  It was very labourous and I usually worked at least 12 hours a day.  I didn’t complain about it because I was getting paid twenty six dollars and fifty cents an hour.    Every Saturday that I worked I got paid time and a half which came out to about forty dollars an hour. At 18 years old this was a lot of money to be making.  My friends would ask how I got the job or what I was doing with the money?  I had been spending some of it.  I bought a brand new wardrobe and a huge stereo system, but I still had lots of money coming in.  At the time I drove an 82 Toyota truck and thought maybe buying a new Toyota truck would be cool. I began to stop spending my paychecks and started to put the cash in the bank. I soon had over five thousand dollars and started looking at trucks, but then I changed my mind.  I decided I didn’t need anymore new toys. What I really needed was to travel and to learn some new things about the world.  That is when I decided to move to Spain!!!
 
 
ゴミ捨て場からスペインへ飛び出した！

　私は高校を卒業すると建設会社で働き始めました。私達の州の新しいゴミ捨て場を作り始めたのです。それは大変骨の折れる仕事で、普通、少なくとも一日１２時間は働きました。時給２６ドル５０セント支払われましたので不平はありませんでした。毎週土曜日の仕事では1.5倍の金額が支払われましたので、時給は約４０ドルになりました。

　１８才にはものすごい稼ぎだったのです。友達は、私がどうやってその仕事についたのかとか、稼いだお金をどうしているかなどど尋ねるのでした。私は稼いだお金をいくらか使っていました。新品の衣装だんすやとてつもなく大きなステレオ装置を購入しましたが、それでもまだたくさんのお金が入ってきました。当時、私は８２年型トヨタのトラックを運転していました。そしてトヨタトラックの新車を購入すればカッコイイだろうな、などと考えていました。私は給料のお金を浪費するのを止めることにし、銀行に貯金し始めました。間もなくすると５０００ドルを超えるお金がたまったので、トラックを物色し始めました。

　しかし、そこで私の気が変わったのです。「もう新しいおもちゃはいらない」と決心したのです。私が本当に必要としていたものは旅に出て、この世界について新しいことを学ぶことでした。それはスペインに飛び出る決心をした時だったのです！！！
