Collaborative Haiku poem – 小鳥とリス

small birds
intimidate a squirrel
by grouping

小鳥でも１０羽揃えばリス脅し
ことり でも　じゅっぱ そろえば　リスおどし

Every morning, we enjoy winter birds as they come to feeders in the porch right outside our house. The exchange between birds and squirrels is also fun to watch. When squirrels show up in the feeders, birds, at first, fly away, but soon fly back one by one and try find out the reaction of squirrels to birds. After a while, squirrels disappear because either they acknowledge the presence of birds or find it is too tiresome to deal with birds. Anyway, it shows that even small birds can be a force to reckon with when they group.

　鳥の餌場が窓のすぐ外ですので、毎朝、朝食をいただきながら鳥の群れの動きを楽しんでいます。小鳥とリスのやりとりもその一つです。リスがやってくると小鳥は最初は一斉に飛び立ちますが、まず、１羽、２羽と遠巻きに戻ってきながらリスの反応を試してみます。リスが何もしないとわかると、リスに向かって複数の小鳥がずらりと並んだり、バタバタと飛び回って、知らん顔のリスに小鳥の存在を知らせています。そのうち、リスも小鳥の存在を認めたのか、それとも面倒になったのか、餌場からいなくなるのですが、小さな鳥でも多数集まれば結構威力を発するものだと感じ入っています。
