Seeing whales, dolphins, sharks and whale sharks is always a very special thing but there is one more animal that is fairly rare to see but I have been very fortunate to see while scuba diving, riding on a boat and walking along the beach. To me they are like a Prince of the ocean. Very special. Since they are on the endangered species list this makes it even more rare to see them. Just recently when I arrived to Waikiki Beach there was a monk seal sleeping on the beach! In order that people wouldn’t bother it, the monk seal had ropes surrounding it to keep people from getting to close to it and trying to touch it. The monk seal slept most of the day and occasionally went in to the water. It acted as if nobody was there since it did not acknowledge the people that were around it.

　海に出て、鯨、イルカ、サメ、そして、ジンベイザメと出会うのは、常に特別なことです。しかし、もう一つ、滅多に出会えない動物がいます。モンク アザラシです。私はスキューバダイビングをしている時、船上で、或いは、浜辺を歩いている時、出会うことができました。私にとってこの動物は、海の王子様のようなものです。この動物は絶滅危惧種のリストに載っていて、目にすることは、本当に稀です。つい最近、ワイキキビーチに行った時、ビーチで眠っているモンク アザラシを見ました。モンクアザラシのまわりには、ロープが張ってありました。人が近寄り過ぎたり、さわったりしないためです。モンクア ザラシは、時折、海に入る程度で、一日の大半、寝ていました。また、まわりの人間に気づいていなかったので、誰もいないかのように振る舞っていました。
