Collaborative Haiku Poem – フェンネル

planting fennel
get ready for welcoming
butterflies

フェネル植え用意万端蝶を待つ
ファネルうえ　よういばんたん　ちょう を まつ

call butterflies
to my fennel garden
beautiful harmony

(Michiko version)
蝶を呼ぶ黄色い庭のハーモニー
ちょう を よぶ　きいろい にわ の　ハーモニー

Ever since we learned, incidentally, two years ago that swallowtails preferred fennel to parsley or carrot greens, we stopped growing the latter, although we still grow some parley in planters at the other side of the house. One entire raised bed is dedicated to fennel of the green leaf type, called “frond fennel”When we happened to witness cardinals eating the butterfly larvae, we decided to plant lots and lots of fennel. Because we’d like to keep cardinals around, too, we think that only way to help increase the population of butterflies is to provide them with plenty of food. We will find soon enough how the measure works.

　一昨年、興味半分で植えたフェンネル（およびフェネル。和名はウイキョウ　茴香）が揚羽蝶の大好物と知って以来、それまで植えていたパセリや人参をやめ、もっぱらフェネルを育てています（パセリだけはプランターに植えて家の反対側に置いています）。蝶々用には葉っぱだけが茂る種類のフェネルで充分。今年は一つの植え床いっぱいに植えました。昨年、蝶々の幼虫（サナギ）がカーデｲナルの餌食となっているのを目撃して、カーデｲナルを追い出さずに蝶々を守るには蝶々の好物を増やすしかないと取った急遽の一策。さて、この方法が功を奏すかどうか、夏の来るのを待つばかりです。
