On Saturday, the 16th of February, I volunteered to help at the Bacon Festival in Des Moines. This festival celebrates the importance of pork and pork products like bacon to Iowa. A delegation from Yamanashi also attended this year and sold sake and eggplants wrapped in bacon. The delegation from Japan was invited because of the sister state relationship that started when Iowa sent pigs to Yamanashi in 1960 after two terrible typhoons. The delegation members were mostly college students and businessmen. Interestingly, I volunteered to help the Japan America Society of Iowa with spreading information about Japanese culture at the event. We were located next to the delegation from Yamanashi. Many of us wore yukata as an example of Japanese culture. I tried to make my obi look like bacon.

　２月１６日土曜日、私はデモイン市で行なわれたベーコン フェスティバルで、ボランティアをしました。このフェスティバルは、アイオワ州にとって豚肉やベーコンのような豚肉製品の大切さを心に刻む為のものです。山梨県からの代表団も参加して、日本酒やなすのベーコン巻きを売っていました。デモイン市と甲府市との姉妹関係は、１９５８年に結ばれ、山梨県とアイオワ州との姉妹関係は１９６０年に樹立されました。山梨県とアイオワ州との姉妹関係は、二度の台風災害に遭った山梨県に対し、アイオワ州が豚を贈ったことに始まります。この関係から代表団が招待されました。代表団のメンバーは、主に大学生とビジネスマンでした。興味深いことに、私は、アイオワ日米協会でボランティアをする機会に恵まれ、このフェスティバルで日本文化を広めるお手伝いをしました。私達は山梨県の代表団の隣りに陣取りました。私たちメンバーの多くは、日本文化の一つの例として、ゆかたを着ました。私は帯がベーコンに見えるように作ろうと思いました。
