Collaborative Haiku Poem – 鬼つらら

menacing icicles
melt and refreeze
two feet wide

鬼つらら溶けて固まり幅二尺
おにつらら　とけて かたまり　はば にしゃく

One-shaku is about 30cm, roughly one foot.
一尺は約３０センチ。二尺は約６０センチ。

It is a beautiful winter sight to see long, thin icicles lining up and sparkling in winter sun. One morning, I saw a thick glass-like board hanging under the east-facing eaves by the front door. A close inspection revealed it was a board made up by several icicles that were melted in the morning sun and quickly refrozen in the afternoon. Each icicle was very big, 1.5 inches in diameter. I’ve seen icicles every winter, but never seen an ice board made up by icicles. These icicles look menacing. By the way, an icicle can be a sharp knife. Avoid walking under eaves in winter!

横一列に並んだ細いつららが、朝日に輝いている様は冬のだけのものです。ある日、玄関脇の東側の軒下に氷の板がぶら下がっているのに気づき近づいて見ると、それはつららが固まってできたものでした。午前中、朝日に溶けたものの、午後には再氷結、それを繰り返した結果、ガッチリと一枚の氷板になったようです。毎冬、つららを見かけますが、直径６センチと大きいつららが固まって氷板になったのを見たのは初めてです。それで、これを鬼つららと呼ぶことにします。ちなみに、つららは直下すると刃物同然の危険物です。冬季は軒下を歩くのを避けましょう。
