荒れた地所変貌遂げて街開き
あれた ちしょ　へんぼう とげて　まちびらき

When I moved to Oahu over 31 years ago there was an area that was mainly old abandoned buildings on the edge of a small shopping mall. When I would occasionally go there it seemed to be such a far away place because nobody ever went there since it was full of abandoned run down buildings and old parking lots. Just in the last 2 to 3 years there has been a building boom there and it has changed dramatically! Now there are new buildings and very nice restaurants and stores that have been built in a very modern, eye pleasing style. Everything is very roomy and there are even apartment buildings built on old abandoned parking lots. Many tourists now visit this area but also many local residents. It is such a nice sight for me to see as I was used to seeing such a large area in a very bad state of disrepair. I am happy that the area was built with a lot of thought involved instead of just putting up stores without any thought of how it would look.

３０年以上も前のことです。私がオアフ島に引っ越して来た時、観光客で賑わう小さなショッピングモールの端（はし）に、使われなくなった建物や駐車場のある広い区域がありました。ショッピングモールの名前は、２０１７年に取り壊されたワードショッピングセンターです。私は、この場所に、たまに行くことがありましたが、凄く遠いところに来た感じがしました。と言うのは、いつ行っても誰もいませんし、荒れ果てた建物と放置された古い駐車場があるだけだったからです。ここ、２〜３年の建設ブームで、この区域も劇的に変わりました。今では、新しい建物、そして、素敵なレストラン、また、いろいろな店が軒をつらね、すべてがモダンで目を楽しませてくれます。すべてが広々としており、以前は誰も近寄らなかった見捨てられたような駐車場跡地にはアパートも建てられました。今では、観光客だけでなく、地元の人達もよく出かけるようになりました。以前の荒廃した状態を見慣れた私にとって、すっかり生まれ変わった姿を見るのは幸せなことです。建築家が、この場所を設計するにあたって、景観への配慮を忘れることなく、知恵を尽くした作り方をしてくれたことは本当に嬉しいことです。
